Mexico City Travel Guide

Mexico City is one of the oldest cities in North America. This ancient home of the Aztecs is a multicultural melting pot of indigenous languages, festivals, and, of course, fiery but delicious food. Are you planning a visit to this populous city? Then check out our Mexico City vacation travel guide.

Mexico City is highly populated, and the streets can get quite crowded, leading to traffic congestion.  But we found the public transportation systems affordable and fairly reliable, especially the Metro rail lines and Metro buses.

Minibusses that operate as taxis, called peseros and combis, are very cheap informal transport options.

Bike rentals are also top-rated here and we found them to be a great way to get some added exercise in the open air while sightseeing.

Uber rideshare services are available, but not Lyft. A few local taxi cab companies also operate along similar lines.

Mexico City is the capital, largest, and most populous city in Mexico. With its countless museums, historical landmarks, and cultural attractions it’s an exciting prospect for tourists.

Important Things To Do

Currency

The official currency in Mexico City, and the rest of Mexico, is the Mexican Peso.

National Languages

Mexico has many indigenous languages, although here in Mexico City (as elsewhere in the country), most of the population speaks Spanish. English is not widely spoken.

You may find that some of the staff at the top hotels speak English. But locals appreciate it when you try to use at least some common Spanish phrases when getting around.

Climate And Weather

Mexico City’s climate is subtropical. Despite the tropical latitude, the high altitude means the nights can be cold, especially in Winter. The nighttime cold is more pronounced in the countryside than in the city.

Most of the rainfall occurs in the Summertime, particularly in July and August. Spring is the warmest season but the nights can still be cold. The first rains start towards the end of Spring, in May. Autumn/Fall is quite short. Winter days are dry and pleasant but nights can get quite chilly.

The best time to visit Mexico City is Springtime. It’s the warmest month and, during March and April, the rains won’t have started yet.

The winter days are also warm enough to plan your vacation around so you could also consider traveling in December or January.

Note that these months can get pretty busy as many tourists travel here to enjoy the great weather. If you’d prefer to skip the crowds and don’t mind a little rain, we recommend visiting in May or October to November.

Best Attractions In Mexico City

  • Museo Nacional de Antropología: You’ll want to spend at least 2 hours (we recommend even longer) at this National Museum of Anthropology. It is home to everything from the Piedra del Sol - the famous Aztec Calendar Stone - to pre-Columbian era artifacts from the early 1500s. We roamed the halls of this massive museum for almost a whole day, taking in all the fascinating pieces of history. Guided tours are offered, free of charge.
  • Bosque de Chapultepec: Known as Chapultepec Forest in English, this former 13th-century home to the remnants of the Aztec Empire is now a lively park. The 1600 acres are divided into the site of the former presidential palace, several museums, as well as a zoo. Traveling with kids? They’ll love the amusement park here, and the statues and monuments throughout the area are ideal focus points for vacation pics. There’s even a lake where you can rent a paddleboat.
