About the Participants
Stefano Silvestri
Stefano Silvestri has been the president
of the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) in Rome since 2001,
and as such, he is responsible for defense and security studies.
Mr. Silvestri is professor of Strategic
Studies at the Free University of Social Studies (LUISS) in Rome.
He is also a commentator on foreign policy and security matters
for the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.
Mr. Silvestri has been an appointed
member of the Conseil Economique de la Défense of the French Government
since 1998. He is the scientific advisor to the Italian Center of
Higher Defence Studies (CASD) and to the Military Center of Strategic
Studies (CeMiSS) of the Italian Defence Ministry. Mr. Silvestri
is also a member of the board of the Italian Association of Aerospace
and Defence Industries (AIAD).
Stefano Silvestri has been a researcher
at the IAI since 1967; he served as vice-director from 1974 to 1976
and as vice-president from 1981 to 2000. He was been a researcher
at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London
from 1970 to 1971 and a lecturer on Mediterranean security at the
Johns Hopkins University Bologna Center from 1972 to 1976.
Mr. Silvestri has served as special assistant to the Deputy Minister
of Foreign Affairs (European Policies) from 1974 to 1976, and as
consultant to the President of the Council of Ministers (1979–80,
1981–1983, 1986–1988, 1993–94), the Minister of Internal Affairs
(1979), the Minister of Industry and Trade (1989–1993), and the
Minister of Defence (1980, 1984–85, 1993 to the present).
Mr. Silvestri was Deputy Secretary of
Defence of the Italian Government from January 1995 to May 1996.
